When people think about flooring, they often focus on what they can see, like the finish, the color, the texture. The true foundation of a long-lasting floor isn’t what’s on top however, it’s what lies underneath.
In a recent project, we were brought in after the original prep work had failed. The layer beneath the existing flooring had separated from the concrete slab, leading to unevenness, instability, and ultimately, needing a complete replacement. It’s a common issue, and also one that could’ve been avoided with the right prep work from the beginning.
That’s where our expert team stepped in.
We started by removing all the compromised material, going all the way down to clean, solid concrete. Then we took the time to do things the right way. First, we primed the surface to ensure proper bonding. After that, we poured 25 bags of self-leveler to create a smooth, even surface that would stand up to real-world use. That process alone took a full day, but it was time well spent. We returned the next available Saturday to complete the final install, knowing the base was fully cured and ready.
This kind of prep isn’t always flashy, but it’s essential. In fact, it’s often the difference between a floor that lasts five years and one that lasts twenty. Moisture issues, adhesive failures, cracked tiles, and uneven wear all start beneath the surface. That’s why we focus so much attention on evaluating every space thoroughly, using the proper materials, and applying them with the kind of precision that prevents problems down the road.
Whether it’s a hotel lobby, a school hallway, or a corporate office, a flawless finish starts long before the top layer goes down. Our goal isn’t just to make the floors look good on day one, it’s to confirm they hold up day after day, year after year.
Great floors don’t just happen, they’re built from the ground up with intention, care, and experience. Jack Laurie Group takes pride in doing the work that no one can see, but everyone depends on.
